2008 Teen Travel Camps 
Middle School Trips 
Entering Grades 7 – 9

Rafting the Deschutes – July 13th – 19th, 2008
This raft trip experience emphasizes group cooperation, safety, exploration of the river canyon environment, and most importantly, fun on the water. On Monday, campers will prepare for their adventure on the river while camping at Camp Collins and participating in a variety of camp activities. On Tuesday, they will be bussed to the upper Deschutes River for four days of rafting and camping with experienced guides and YMCA staff. The group will
return to Camp Collins Friday evening to enjoy the last campfire of the week.

Backpacking – July 27th – August 2nd, 2008
Travel to the beautiful backcountry of the Northwest. Campers hike 4 – 6 miles per day as they explore scenic wilderness areas. This trip provides opportunities to learn basic map reading and orienteering skills. Campers will also learn basic backpacking techniques and Leave No Trace ethics. Each day ends around the campfire with reflection and anticipation of the next day's journey. This is a perfect introduction to backpacking and group living skills.

San Juan Islands Kayaking – August 5th – 13th, 2008
This trip begins at Camp Collins where campers will experience an afternoon on the challenge course followed by an evening under the stars. The second morning campers will travel by bus to the beautiful YMCA Camp Orkila, located on Orcas Island in Washington State. Experienced Orkila staff will provide an introduction to navigation, basic kayak strokes, boat handling and safety. Campers spend five days improving their kayaking skills as they explore the beautiful islands, learn basic camping skills and build friendships.

High School Trips 
Entering Grades 9 – 12

Surf & Sand – July 9th – 14th, 2008

Enjoy surfing, body boarding and other beachfront activities with the qualified staff at YMCA Camp Surf in California. We will fly from Portland International Airport to San Diego and spend five days and nights sleeping in tents on the beach at Camp Surf on the Silver Strand. We will take a break from the sand and surf and try our hand at archery, rock climbing and top off the week with a day at the San Diego Zoo.

Rafting the Deschutes – July 20th – 26th, 2008
Spend five days on the Deschutes River. The group will raft the entire 110 mile section of the Deschutes from Warm Springs to where it meets the Columbia River with experienced guides and YMCA staff. This trip offers challenging rapids and an opportunity to explore the river canyon environment. Enjoy this beautiful area while developing outdoor leadership and group living skills.

San Juan Islands Kayaking – August 5th – 13th, 2008

The journey begins at YMCA Camp Collins where campers will spend an afternoon exploring new heights on the challenge course followed by an overnight campout. The morning greets campers with a bus trip to YMCA Camp Orkila, located in the Puget Sound on Orcas Island in WA. The specially trained and experienced staff of Camp Orkila will provide campers with a great introduction to kayaking including boat handling, basic strokes, navigation and safety. The group will spend five days camping on different islands and exploring the beautiful seascape in their kayaks. This trip presents the opportunity for campers to improve their kayaking techniques while building group cooperation skills and making new friends.

Backpacking – August 10th – 16th, 2008
Spend five days and four nights backpacking through stunning Pacific Northwest terrain. Hikers will average 5-7 miles per day as they enjoy lush meadows, mountain lakes and scenic viewpoints. Campers will receive an introduction to topographic map reading, orienteering, outdoor cooking and minimal impact camping. This travel camp will also emphasize trip planning, group cooperation and leadership, and an overall appreciation of the outdoors.

Financial Assistance
Thinking about sending your child to YMCA Camp Collins but not sure you can afford it? Financial assistance is available to all campers. Download the financial assistance form or contact Noelle Landers, Office Manager, at 503.663.5813 to have a form mailed to you. Along with your registration form, please fill out the financial assistance form, include proof of monthly income and deposit and mail it to: Registrar; 3001 SE Oxbow Parkway; Gresham, Oregon 97080. Our office will contact you within 14 days to share how much of a scholarship your family qualifies for.
